The  pictures below, above my responses, are of the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa and his dignified and beautiful wife Rinchen Yangzom; Karmapa with his darling son; Karmapa as a young boy with Sharmapa; Jigme Rinpoche; and Rinchen Yangzom.  FYI - Jigme Rinpoche is the 14th Sharmapa's brother.  Both he and Sharmapa are nephews of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa.  I would like to ask that you take a look at these photographs before reading my response to your excellent question.  Also, keep in mind that His Holiness Kusum Lingpa appointed me as his lineage holder and chos kyi dags mos which means I am a representative of his and his institutions.  In all honesty, I don't even feel comfortable commenting on certain matters after looking at my teachers and members of their family.

You're welcome.  I would have to say, after giving it some thought, that it's fairly obvious that he wasn't thrilled with my devotion to anything but him, no?

I devoted most of my work day to Leonard Cohen matters. Those frequently spilled over into the evenings and weekend.  I also devoted time in my day to car pool my children to and from school and would thereafter work from home so that I could be near Rutger and Ray.

I never questioned whether LC approved of my devotion to Tibetan Buddhism.  Early on, maybe 1989, I joined Leonard Cohen for Rohatsu at Joshu Sasaki Roshi's center in

New Mexico. I wanted to make this statement:  I am a Buddhist, it doesn't matter what tradition one is from, it's not a competitive sport, made a connection with Roshi, and enjoyed Rohatsu.  I do believe LC was a bit competitive with Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche's views so I wanted to cut through that.

Rohatsu is a Japanese word meaning “the eighth day of the last month of the year."  Sesshin is held each year in Zen monasteries throughout the world to commemorate the enlightenment of Shakyamuni Buddha, which occurred when the Lord Buddha at dawn on the eighth day of his retreat.

As I never once saw LC attend Temple, participate in Jewish religious activities (apart from the one dinner with Leon Wieseltier), was present when he was ordained, etc. I was rather shocked by his reaction to the Hollywood Reporter article that referred to him as a Buddhist.  I still need to find LC’s letter to the Hollywood Reporter and his position that he was a Jew.  Truly astounding given the fact that he was an ordained Zen Buddhist monk.

This response will address the time I devoted to Leonard Cohen's retreat, projects we worked on during that retreat, and Zen Buddhism in general.  

I was on the Board of Directors for Orgyen Khachod Ling, His Holiness Kusum Lingpa's Vajrakilaya Center in Los Angeles, as well as Rinzai-Jin, Kyozin Joshu Sasaki's Zen Center in Los Angeles, Caifornia.  I refer to Kusum Lingpa Rinpoche using the term of endearment "Lamasang."  His Holiness was a title assigned to him by students preparing promotional materials for his first tour of North America.  

I accompanied Leonard Cohen to many meetings with Roshi, events at centers throughout the country and in Canada (or other countries), took LC's artwork with poetic note to Roshi  together  with a gift of $9,200 for Roshi's 92nd birthday, and am the individual Roshi personally asked to oversee his 90th birthday celebrations that paid for/sponsored by Leonard Cohen.   I arranged every detail of the entire affair, had banners made for the event (they were done by CTR's banner maker), rings created, invitations created and printed; designed the entire event; had pumpkins carved, flower arrangements created, etc.  I worked with LC on Roshi's tribute book. I was frequently on Mt. Baldy, hanging out in Roshi's household; spent time with Roshi there; and, at times assisted LC in the kitchen assisting with meals.  I also spent a considerable amount of time at Rinzai-ji, including at Board of Director meetings.  I served as Board Secretary, took shorthand notes of the meetings, and prepared the minutes that were transmitted to the Board and the Board's attorneys.  As there were matters such as the purchase of property and so forth, I was also involved in discussions about those matters, including when I was on vacation in Hawaii with Rutger and Steve while pregnant with Ray Charles, Leonard Cohen's godson.

Roshi was also my teacher, a good friend, and I would like to point out that at no time did I experience the type of conduct he was accused of prior to his death at the age of 107 and referred to in the news media as the "tainted zen master."  As I spent a considerable amount of time alone with Roshi, traveled with him, and assisted him into bed in his separate hotel room, and so forth, I found the allegations against him utterly shocking.

This same type of situation happened with my friend, Sogyal Rinpoche, prior to his death.  The news media would refer to Rinpoche as the "lama felled by abuse."  I always thought Sogyal Rinpoche was targeted due to his considerable fame and prominence.

Roshi once told me that one’s interest in Tibetan Buddhism vs. Zen Buddhism was simply a matter, from his point of view, of what charmed one’s mind in the same manner that one’s mind is charmed by poetry or a piece of art.  In fact, I believe Roshi was referring to one's relationship with any religious tradition.  I have been a student of Tibetan Buddhism since I was 13 and remain devoted to my teachers and our authentic traditions.

I most xertainaly don't believe everything I read about people in the news media (or, almost anything at all these days).  For example, stories about my dear friend Phil Spector.  Phil also met Roshi at one point and was well aware of our center, His Holiness Kusum Lingpa, and some of the anctics with monks and students.  He frequently sent amusing faxes commenting on these topics. 

Leonard Cohen and I worked on many projects at Mr. Baldy - including studio and live album projects, materials for Book of Longing, lithographs, etc.  .  At one point, I had some of LC's graphic art printed as large giclee prints.  I was experimenting with images from greeting card company, Amazing Card Company, and enlarged the artwork for these prints.  I was experimenting with the types of papers one might use for artbooks and giclee prints and experimented with many types of rice papers.  My father-in-law, Mort Lindsey (a man, as everyone likes to note, was “Judy Garland’s and "Barbra Streisand's conductor” and extraordinary pianist) was meeting with a publisher of art books.  Mort understood  I was interested in the types of paper this publisher used for his books and so he introduced me to the publisher who provided me with many types of paper samples.  I spent a tremendous amount of time at Mt. Baldy working with on his projects, including Book of Longing and lithographs.  I negotiated the lithograph deal originally with Richard Goodall Gallery and was also in touch with Yoko Ono/John Lennon’s Bag One company which prints John Lennon’s lithographs.  A law firm I worked with when I was young represented Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s lithographs.  

I worked extensively with Leonard Cohen and Armelle Brusq extensively on the project Spring 1996, was frequently on Mt. Baldy interviews, arranged the interview with the Shambhala Sun, and so forth.

LC also asked me to travel to NY with Roshi when his long time student Mary Farkas, New York Zen Center) was dying and I was present when Roshi said goodbye to Mary and gave her final instructions on dying.  Our trip was cut short due to the LA Riots. 

My point being this:  I indeed devoted to the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism but it did not interrupt my work for and on behalf of Leonard Cohen.  While LC interferred tremendously in my personal life, and I also spent considerable time with Adam and Lorca Cohen, I did not believe my private life was any real business of Leonard Cohen's.  Leonard Cohen used to say to others that Stranger Music's corporate by-laws clearly state that our relationship was purely business so as not to confuse anyone.  Oftentimes people viewed us as a couple and one time a representative of MTV asked me, in front of Leonard Cohen and representatives of Sony if I was "Leonard Cohen's mistress."  I found the comment to be absurd, misogynistic, and sexist.  I was a female business woman but have now been wrongfully converted into Leonard Cohen's "lover" which I most certainly was not.  Leonard Cohen and his operatives have shared defamatory stories about me, Tibetan lamas, and other matters on blogs and in emails transmitted to the IRS, FBI, DOJ, and others.  It's obvious to me that LC set out to destroy my reputation, undermine my credibility, and extended his rabid attacks to my sons, members of my family, and the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages of Tibetan Buddhism.  I assisted LC and Roshi on countless fronts in many arenas. 

I was also exceedingly busy with Orgyen Khachod Ling, the visits of His Holiness Kusum Lingpa and his sons (Hung Kar Dorje Rinpoche and Dorje Trangpo Rinpoche), oversaw the administration of the center and all programs, and many Tibetan lamas stayed with, lived with, and visited me.

As Buddhist, how could LC object to my devotion to Tibetan Buddhism  Nevertheless, he ultimately viewed me as a sorceress or witch who practiced dark or black arts as opposed to being engaged in any wholesome or bodhisattva activity.  Soon after LC and I parted ways, he and RK were running around falsely accusing me of having sex with LC's personal tax and corporate lawyer for a "private annuity obligation."  At no time did I have sex with Richard Westin or any of LC's professional representatives.  I have no idea why LC felt compelled to convert me into a hooker, whore or prostitute.  I also have no idea why he and RK were sitting with Steve Lindsey, my younger son's father, falsely accusing me of having sex with LC's attorneys, Oliver Stone, Tibetan lamas, and others.  I believe they were attempting to stir SL up and that resulted in Ray's coordinated custody matter.  It seems as though LC, RK, and Rice (a vulgar and crass woman) became obsessed with creating an illusory being that in no way resembled me.  I also felt early on that perhaps LC was attempting to insinuate that I was Mata Hari, a woman out seducing naive men.   I suppose I was right as the narrative that LC and his representatives/operatives developed generally involved into a disgruntled ex-lover who was stalking LC for no reason, after having misappropriated millions of dollars (in fraud damages and interest, I might note), who simply decided for no reason whatsoever to begin stalking Leonard Cohen and requesting federal tax forms and corporate tax returns.  I literally believe this image was Leonard Cohen's defense against the allegations that he committed civil and criminal tax fraud and then set out to crush, silence, and, as Boies Schiller confirmed for me, intended to destroy me and my sons.  The situation has been so extreme that I did begin to wonder if the people targeting me were literal drug addicts or mentally insane.  As my legal representatives (who were discussing corporations, business matters, outstanding tax, legal, and accounting issues with RK), mentioned LC's long and unrelenting pattern of sexual harassment, I assume the false allegation that I was his "lover' was an offensive legal maneuver.  As the cliches goes, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.  I have witnessed Leonard Cohen engage in this unwhomesome activity with other women such as Ann Diamond.  

LC was jealous of my relationship with His Holiness Kusum Lingpa as well as my relationships with Phil Spector, Oliver Stone, Steve Lindsey, Paul Burger, and Dan Meade.

During Dan Meade's visit to LA (after the death of his long time  partner, Karen Lavin), LC Cohen told me he was dedicating his "body of work" to me.  Dan and I discussed that at dinner in Santa Monica and found it rather intriguing.  Dan suggested we stop by LC's after dinner to see what he meant.  Dan was particularly curous after reading LC’s vicious email aggressively attacking me after he called and Dan answered the phone and said I was in the shower.  Dan, Ray, and I drove over to LC’s and I alone went to the door to see if it was a good time for a visit.  LC answered the door in his boxer shorts and said “I’m sorry but I’m busy, darling.”   

I suppose LC did in fact devote and dedicate a tremendous a substantial portion of his creative work to me (and managed to have all the perjury, fraud and libelous aspects of that work “litigation protected” and ready for sale by various courts so that it could become a press release of sorts for the news media and others)  - including the implementation of his Goebbels' style propaganda blitz that has made its way into every nook and cranny of the WW web, into Tibet and the Himalayas, and preserved in the public domain.  It's most definitely "on the record."  I suppose that's why my family, friends, and even teachers residing in monasteries in Tibet, retreats in Germany and France, throughout Europe and North America, and associates (including Facebook friends) throughout the world – as well as my sons, elderly father, and family members - are able to read the libelous allegations and frequently  write to question what they’ve read in the countless articles and with respect to information on the worldwide web.  When my teachers, family and friends (or even strangers on Facebook) have brought these items to my attention, I have attempted to confront or refute the libel, which is my first amendment right and a lawful defense, but the City Attorney, LC, and his team have argued that this is in fact “cyber stalking” which it most certainly is not.   This is generally the storyline courts, governments, law enforcement, LC and his team, LC's fans and operatives, and countless others actually believe:

Beginning in May 2008, Leonard Cohen embarks on a multi-year World Tour.

Kelley Lynch closely follows the press coverage regarding Cohen's live concert performances and posts numerous defamatory comments regarding Cohen on Internet websites of major publications (including, for example, major newspapers and music magazines Rolling Stone and Spin) that published concert reviews. In her wide-spread Internet posts, Lynch falsely accused Cohen of criminal activity, including committing "criminal tax fraud", theft from his former managers and advisors, and alleged "perjury" regarding a gun incident in a recording studio with Phil Spector before a grand jury in the Spector murder trial. Lynch's relentless "cyberstalking" of Cohen continued for the duration of his 2008-2010 World Tour.

I have not falsely accused Leonard Cohen of anything and his propaganda blitz was meant to conceal the truth and distort reality.  LC was really quite a shrewd individual as my mother oftentimes noted.

My family and friends around the world have been very disturbed, concerned for my welfare and the welfare of my family, believe I am in a dangerously insane situation that involves truly horrific and dishonest individuals.  They also believe I am being harassed by judges, the court's expert quacks, as well as other demonic setting sun creatures.  

The ordained monk Leonard Cohen, his representatives and operatives, and half the fascist government (as well as the court systems of Los Angeles in Los Angeles and Colorado) have used every dirty trick in the book against me.  It feels as though I am literally in Nazi Headquarters with Hitler, Goebbels, Mengele, and others in control of the truth, fact, and reality while lawyers for both the prosecution and defense routinely lie about everything.  This is all being done in the name of a man who is viewed on the world stage as a religious sage.  As Steven Machat astutely noted that Leonard Cohen uses religion to defraud and or deceive others.

Many of my family, friends, and teachers have been harassed, contacted by and/or attacked by Stephen Gianelli whose work on LC's behalf, as he confirmed for Alan Hootnick, was much appreciated by LC.  To this very day, SG continues to target me and I have received threatening communications from him  related to this situation, the Los Angeles DA who targeted Phil Spector, the DA's thug investigator Marco who threatened to pick me up in Northern New Jersey and “arrest your ass), which local police thought was a credible threat, and asked me to tell the FBI "Merry Christmas.”  SG continues to raise Marko who

posted online about Phil Spector, a body count, and stated online that PS would only leave prison in a "body bag."  SG recently harassed me over Marko and mentioned “Merry Christmas," FBI, and a "final waltz."  These communications sound distinctly like threats.

So let me ask you this, when a man like LC behaves as he has (and aligns himself with evil and deranged SG who attacked the 17th Karmapa, 14th Sharmapa, wrote the following letters to me using Gianelli's famous fake monikers to slander Karmapa and Sharmapa and attack me), I don’t care what his views are on much of anything.

LC should have considered using my so called lowly religious practices, as he mentioned in his obscene and highly dishonest and libelous VIS, to reform himself prior to his death rather than fixating on his obsession with me, spending millions upon millions of dollars  on legal fiction writing, and acting out his revenge fantasies. 

See emails below.  Not sure why SG, part of religious sage LC’s team, thought it was appropriate to write the "bloody stump" and other emails using libelous fake email accounts created in the names of my teachers, the 17th Karmapa and the 14th Sharmapa.  

Perhaps Leonard Cohen and his team believed that an attack on Tibetan Buddhism as a whole was a good tactic.  Leonard Cohen's VIS was quite clear on that front.  Perhaps LC would have preferred to have me chained or tied to his kitchen chair while he performed with the "Hallelujah" choir and wrote a birthday poem for Roshi basically stating that he was leaving Roshi for another woman (which I interpreted to mean "another whore").  As a point of interest, LC used stencils for this and other images.  That was part of his bag of tricks.

Take a look at LC's VIS where he lies about me, IRS, IRS matters, falsely alleges that IRS will come after me, and preposterously signs this self-conscious, nauseating over-flowery aggressive rant and stamps it with his Japanese seal – for posthumous reading by his global fans or perhaps even scholars.  According to LC’s own VIS, I wasn’t actually devoted to Tibetan Buddhism:

“It gives me no please to see my one time friend shackled to a chair in a court of law, her considerable gifts bent to the service of darkness, deceit and revenge.”

I think LC might have been referring to his own lowly black arts (including theft, slander, and revenge) and using dark magic found in his favorite book, Morning of the Magicians) that I mentioned in an email to IRS, FBI, and DOJ and used his VIS to retaliate against me for mentioning that in public emails and elected to refer to me as a black arts practitioner with considerable gifts.  This is Leonard Cohen’s revenge fantasy. Leonard Cohen “borrowed” and used my phrase "revenge fantasies" in his VIS.  That’s a common LC practice – plagiarism and failure to properly credit others.  These statements were LC's attempt to further convert his own unwholesome activities into my intent to annoy the master and blame his own wrongdoings on me and others.  The entire trial appeared to be a response to my communications with IRS, FBI, DOJ, the letter to DDA Alan Jackson, PS' jackass prosecutor, and the entire trial was devoted to spinning the emails.  I suppose DA Steve Cooley's personal response was to send a "Merry Christmas” message to the FBI where his own grandfather evidently once worked and waste taxpayer dollars have men like Captain Jack Horvath argue that a ""parody letter" to Bruce Cutler w as actual a viable threat.  Makes one wonder why any of these people have jobs.

People have interpreted "Merry Christmas" to mean "fuck you" and concluded that it sounds like something the Sopranos would say prior to riddling a car with bullets.  In any event, we know LC poured over my communications to federal authorities, Phillip's legal team, the media, and other.  The trial was a propaganda blitz filled with carefully crafted statements he understood the worldwide media and others would regurgitate ad nauseum.  I’ll assume Leonard Cohen’s body of work, before many courts throughout this country and distributed around the worldwide web, was really just his perverted version of a “love letter” as he informed Betsy Superfon in May 2005 that he felt remorseful and noted that I was the “love of his life.”  He testified that I was the “enemy” which I thought was a bit over the top for “our most important spy.”

BTW, Streeter did refer to her own handiwork as the "unraveling of a con."  She referred to me as a con artist not legitimately in need of tax information.  The IRS, FTB, other tax agencies, and I know that she has lied about this issue.  None of us are in receipt of the federal tax information - 1099s, K-1s, or the corporate tax returns.  So perhaps the exposing the real trickster and con will be her legal undoing and she will ideally be disbarred and imprisoned.  That is indeed where she belongs.  Streeter is dangerous to society, innocent people, and justice itself and used her own talent for dubious arts to promote a vicious attack on me, my sons and elderly parents, while lying to jurors and the court throughout the proceedings.  Streeter behaved like a misogynist, sycophant, and racist individual throughout the proceedings but was skipping around, gushing about LC, breaking the podium, and running off to let LC know the Court said the LA Times could take photographs - as it turned out, of me, shackled in court which was blasted across the worldwide web.  That was merely a Goebbels’ propaganda photograph of the individual labeled “the enemy" - me, Leonard Cohen's personal manager for approximately 17 years and someone he actually felt was intelligent and highly capable.  Perhaps LC projected one of his psychotic breaks onto me and countless parties saw a way to make a quick buck, advance their careers, or make their way into the news media.

Did I ever mention to you that LC tried to handcuff me to the bed in his cabin while at Mt. Baldy.  He reached for them after he walked naked out of the bathroom, violently threw me onto the bed, and tried to rape me.  I literally had to fight him off.  He appeared deranged,  high on drugs, and unhinged.  As we have discussed, I began my greeting card company to get away from Leonard Cohen once we had completed certain project and, as LC swore, hired an independent accounting to do an accounting of many matters.

Of course, he attempted to conceal his conduct and moved offensively when he/RK went into SL's office and falsely informed the father of my son that I had sex with Oliver Stone and the great man himself while I was with him with the specific intent to stir up a custody matter that would involve roles played by LC, RK, and Betsy Superfon, a drug addicted (at least when I knew her and she had bottles of vicodin, soma, valium, etc. in her bag for all to see) liar and jealous woman who introduced the alleged "informant" arm’s dealer into my life although he knew nothing about me, my life, Cohen, or anything else for that matter – but she did like to find ways to associate with celebrities.  Cohen likes handcuffs as one can see from the Future artwork.  I tend to doubt it gave him "no pleasure" to see me shackled.  He probably got off on it and during my trial he literally looked unhinged, obsessed, someone on meth, or perhaps a crackhead (someone who acts like a crack addict without the actual crack), which is something he frequently used to lose weight in preparation for his tours. 

In the end, Leonard Cohen wanted people focused on me as a "witch" or "hag" and my teachers as the "black magicians" he read about in "Morning of the Magicians."  It was a page taken right out of Goebbels’ propaganda principles: 

After the war, US personnel discovered a very large diary dictated by Goebbels. In it are his principles of propaganda. Leonard Doob's 1950 article details them from a translation of the diary by Louis Lochner (1948).

Hitler's Basic Principles

These principles are abstracted from Jowett & O'Donnell.

·         Avoid abstract ideas - appeal to the emotions.

·         Constantly repeat just a few ideas. Use stereotyped phrases.

·         Give only one side of the argument.

·         Continuously criticize your opponents.

·         Pick out one special "enemy" for special vilification

Propaganda must label events and people with distinctive phrases or slogans.

1.      They must evoke responses which the audience previously possesses.

2.     They must be capable of being easily learned.

3.     They must be utilized again and again, but only in appropriate situations.

4.     They must be boomerang-proof.

Leonard Cohen clearly relied upon Goebbels' Principles of Propaganda.

When reading these propaganda principles, keep in mind that they were applied in wartime (WWII) and involve issues that don't arise otherwise. It's a long list, but Goebbels was dealing with the complexity of an all-out war. 

BTW, have you found any information to support Leonard Cohen's statements that he was Roshi's dharma heir.  I never have.

The emails from Stephen Gianelli (inexplicably copied to me) to Ed Lozzi, Lana Clarkson's publicist, and Ed Lozzi were simply part of a word doc containing vile, vulgar, obscene, and threatening emails sent to me using fake gmail acccounts and libeling the names of my teachers, Karmapa and Sharmapa.  As you can see for yourself, these communications contain threats to have me murdered, raped, possibly worse, assaulted in jail, and instruct me to commit suicide.  The emals libel Oliver Stone for reasons I cannot imagine.  They were most certainly sent by Stephen Gianelli who continues to harass me and is once again mentioning DA Steve Cooley's thug investigataor MARKO.  Lozzi "wrote" that Michelle Rice, to paraphrase him, is like a dominatrix over me in court.  He represented Lana Clarkson and Anna Nicole Smith, two women evidently addicted to vicodin, who both died horrific deaths, and is a friend of Phil Spector's prosecutor AJ - as confirmed on his PR website which contains two of them.

Deputy City Attorney Sandra Jo Streeter, City Attorney of Los Angeles, viewed a prayer to Sharmapa regarding Mahakala was an "intent to annoy" Leonard Cohen, credible threat, and evidence of harassment.  She also concludes that an email to Stephen Gianelli advising him to immediately cease stalking and harassing Ms. Lynch's then minor son was evidence that KL referred to Leonard Cohen as a "child molester."

The Origins of the Protector Mahakala

Gelong Deway Khorlo (Bhikshu Wheel of Joy) belonged to the retinue of a previous Buddha named Sangye Tsuktorchan (Buddha with an Ushnisha). The bhikshu had developed special cognitions and could also demonstrate miracles. Proud of his abilities, he competed with the Buddha and, of course, he lost, which disappointed him greatly. Then the god Shiva appeared and said to him, “If you pray to be born as my son, I will give you dominion over the three realms.” Since he desperately wanted to be victorious, the bhikshu prayed to Shiva. However, Sangye Tsuktorchan knew of this and said to the bhikshu, “Except for some temporary happiness, being born as Shiva’s son has little benefit.” So the bhikshu confessed his faults, and the Buddha prophesied that he would be born as Shiva’s son, generate the resolve to become fully awakened to benefit others, and finally become enlightened as the Buddha Telway Wangpo.

Following the Buddha’s prediction, the bhikshu was reborn as the son of Shiva and Umadevi. His skin was very dark, his appearance terrifying and his power great, so he was given the name Mahakala, The Great Black One. His sister was called Remati. He roamed the three worlds and came to Bodhgaya when the Buddha became fully awakened. There Mahakala made the commitment to guard the Buddha’s teachings, becoming a powerful protector for sincere practitioners.

The Karmapa’s Connection to Mahakala

In India, the teachings on Mahakala (also known as Bernakchan) were given by the Buddha, but they had to wait for the right time to be revealed and propagated. Almost a thousand years later, one of the great mahasiddhas, Dombi Heruka (eighth to ninth century), was staying in Hahadropa Cemetery. Mahakala and his retinue appeared clearly to the Heruka and reconfirmed his commitment to protect the teachings. Dombi Heruka asked him, “Where are the sadhanas for your practice?” And Mahakala replied that they could be found in the terraced steps of a particular stupa. Dombi Heruka then retrieved the texts and spread these teachings and practices in India.

The transmission of Mahakala’s practices came to Tibet through the translator Zangkar Lotsawa (Zangsdkar lo tsa ba, also known as Mal gyo). When he went to India, even though Dombi Heruka had passed away, his wisdom body appeared to Zangkar Lotsawa. Dombi Heruka gave him the transmission of Mahakalatantras, including the empowerments and the sadhanas. This transmission eventually passed to Pomdrakpa, who was a main teacher of the Second Karmapa, Karma Pakshi (1206-1283). Through the centuries, this transmission has been passed down the lineage right up to the present day.

Karma Pakshi wrote many sadhanas for Mahakala, and one of the most important was “The Three Cycles of the Protector,” which contained all the instructions for how to meditate, how to chant, and so forth. Karma Pakshi said that the Black Hat Lama (the Karmapa) and the Black-Cloaked Protector are inseparable. As a lama, he is the Karmapa, and as the one who guards and spreads the teachings, he is the Protector Bernakchan. And so it makes no difference whether a lineage exists or not between Karmapa and Mahakala, because they are not different. Karma Pakshi said that if one wanted proof of their connection, one need only look at the Karmapa’s teachings, which were flourishing due to the activity of Mahakala.

In his spiritual biography, several events illustrate their connection. Karma Pakshi relates that one time “the mandala of Mahakala’s face appeared in a vision; it covered the earth and sky, staying present for a whole day. Further, Mahakala’s eyes appeared like suns and moons; innumerable rays of light gathered in great masses; and a thundering HUM roared from his mouth. There arose limitless activity to overpower all of apparent existence. After, Karma Pakshi went to the country of Korig where he cured many who were sick, crippled, or disabled, just by slapping them, and so his fame as a realized master spread in all directions.”

A Brief History of Protector Practice in General and the Kamtsang Kagyu Tradition in Particular

Protectors of the genuine Dharma can be found in the sutras; for example, in the Samadhiraja Sutra (the King of Samadhis Sutra), taught at Rajgriha on the Mountain Resembling a Flock of Vultures. At that time, the Buddha asked, “Who will protect this sutra so that its lineage remains?” On the human level, Chandraprabhava (a previous incarnation of Gampopa) said he would do so. On the non-human level, numerous deities who were present also vowed to protect it. Speaking in general about protectors, the Kadampa Geshe Sharawa (Yönten Drak, 1070-1141) said that those who protect the teachings are the dharmapalas and the sangha. We do not need to supplicate them as this is their responsibility, and in turn, it is our responsibility to offer them tormas or gifts that sustain them.

In a few places, the sutras also mention making offerings to protectors, and with the vajrayana these practices became extensive including numerous Dharma protectors and many kinds of tormas. Such rituals composed long ago by Nagarjuna were found in China; however these practices, which originated in India, spread much more extensively in Tibet, so we find numerous, fierce black deities, such as the Black-Cloaked One (Bernakchen, the Two-Armed Mahakala), the Four-Armed Mahakala, and many others. Their lineages of practice remain alive to this present day. Through Marpa the Translator came the lineage that is practiced in the Karma Kamtsang tradition, which preserves special key instructions, known as the Practice of the Body and Mind Inseparable from the Protector.

Originally the practice of Bernakchen was so secret that only a few close disciples knew that it even existed. Drogön Rechen, a disciple of the First Karmapa, taught it to a few; then the Second Karmapa taught it to a greater number of disciples; the Second Shamar, Khachö Wangpo, (1358-1405) spread it more widely, and finally the Sixth Karmapa, Thongwa Donden (1416-1453), made it extensively available. The first statue of Bernakchen was created by the Seventh Karmapa. From his time, this tradition of practice has expanded and continued to the present day.

If we turn to the history of the ritual itself, the first one was composed by the Second Shamar, and then the Sixth Karmapa expanded the practice, making it so long that it was known as the Boring Mahakala, though its actual name is Burning Up Hostility (sDang ba rnam sreg). (This practice was revived by the Karmapa in 2012 and another new edition was printed for this year’s Gutor.) The Eighth Karmapa (1507-1554) asked the Fifth Shamar, Könchok Yenlak (1526-1583), to condense the text, so he created a shorter practice, called the Abridged Burning Up Hostility (sDang ba rnam sreg las btus pa), which is known these days as the Ritual of Mending and Supplication (bsKang gsol), practiced widely in Kagyu monasteries and centers. This text is also called the Golden One because the first words to be chanted of the parts from Burning Up Hostility were marked in gold.

Finally there is a short version of Burning Up Hostility, known as the Tsalma (mTshal ma), which means the Cinnabar Text, since in this case the first parts to be chanted that were selected from the longer text are marked in vivid red. All three lengths of the ritual will be chanted during Gutor this year: the first and last days are for the short practice; the second and third day, for the long version; and the fourth and fifth days for the middle length text. On the fourth day the practice will begin at 2 am in the morning.

To give the complete picture, there is still another version of the Mahakala practice, written by the Fifteenth Karmapa, who felt that it was inauspicious to have such a short practice, so he composed one that was even more extensive than the text of Burning Up Hostility by the Sixth Karmapa.

A General Introduction Relating to the Mahakala Practice

In a puja, or ritual sadhana practice we invoke and relate to the Guru, the Yidam, and the three roots, or in this case, the protector, Mahakala, who can also be understood as the embodiment of the three roots. What we are primarily focusing on in a puja, is the enlightened activity which pervades space and time. Since the Yidams (enlightened Buddhist deities) are more specifically the activity aspect of the Dharma, through their names their activity becomes obvious. When the ritual of Mahakala is being performed, Mahakala appears in the form of a wrathful deity. It is not because there is something ferocious about Mahakala or that he is aggressive. Mahakala is none other than the inseparability of compassion and loving-kindness. In the view of ultimate wisdom, there is no separation between the Awakened Mind of Buddha and that of Mahakala. Mahakala is a manifestation of the awakened mind.

Appearing in very majestic form, splendid yet frightening, Mahakala stands in the midst of a mountain of flames to symbolize that no enemy can stand this appearance aspect; the sharp chopper, which he holds aloft in one hand, symbolizes the cutting through of negative patterns, aggression, hatred, ignorance–any of the five poisons. No neurosis or negativity can tolerate this very majestic form; the frightening form symbolizes Mahakala as totally devoid of fear or hesitation in his spontaneous yet consistent work toward the benefit and liberation of all beings.

Mahakala is seen standing on the corpse of two human bodies, thus symbolizing the death of negativities and the complete uprooting of negative patterns to such a point that, like a dead body, they will not come to life. It is very important that we know these symbols of Mahakala because many times we have mistaken notions that he may be a clinging spirit or harmful, evil being, perhaps even the Lord of Death ready to devour and attack. One would find great difficulty in relating to the various symbols without understanding that our awakened compassion is the essential quality of the being of Mahakala. Mahakala has never been known to harm one being, even in the slightest manner, because he is constantly benefiting beings through the continuous play of the enlightened mind.

Proper attitude and sincere motivation are necessary when one participates in rituals. One should make supplication that through this participation one’s negativities are completely uplifted and that the protection and guidance of enlightened beings remain inseparable from oneself until perfect awakening is experienced. One asks that one’s presence here and one’s invocation may contribute toward continuous world peace, harmony, friendship, happiness, understanding and goodwill and that all beings be uplifted from the negative patterns which cause chaos. One asks that the blessings and awakened presence of these enlightened deities pervade in all directions. With this attitude, participating in the pujas is of greatest benefit and most practical.
